Recital Weekend General Details

Thrive’s annual recital weekend is something our community looks forward to all season - it’s the culmination of 10 months of consistent effort, practice and growth for our dancers in a professional show setting. We pull out all the stops to make your recital experience fun, seamless and memorable. As we prepare for this season’s show, here’s what you need to know:

  • This performance opportunity is an opt-out show, meaning that we’ll assume your dancer is participating in recital weekend unless we hear from you otherwise. While most of our families choose to participate in this exciting weekend, some are unable to make it an we totally understand. Your dancer will still get lots of value out of class if you choose not to participate.

  • Our recitals are free, non-ticketed events. We think dance should be accessible and want to showcase our dancer’s hard work to as many friends and family members as possible, so you will not need to purchase tickets to our recital weekend shows. We select venues that have the seating capacity to accommodate our growing community and remove some of the barriers to inviting your loved ones to recital weekend. Our goal is to make it easy for you to show up and support your dancer.

  • We have four shows over the course of recital weekend. Instead of having one long 6+ hour show, we choose to break our shows into four 1.5 hour events that are more manageable for our dancers, families and staff. Unless your dancer is on our Company Levels, you will be assigned to one of the four shows.

  • Costumes are expensive - we get that. Please know that we recognize the expense of costumes and do our very best to keep costs down while providing a fun, entertaining, professional show and experience for our community.

Save these Dates!

Thrive’s annual recital weekend will include the following dates. Please reserve all of the below dates on your calendar - unless your dancer is in our Company levels, you will be assigned to ONE dress rehearsal day and time and ONE recital day and time. We will release a final dress rehearsal and recital assignments list in late January/early February after enrollment, classes and staff availability have been finalized.

  • May 29th + 30th (dress rehearsal days)

  • May 31st at 1:00 pm - Show #1

  • May 31st at 5:00 pm - Show #2

  • June 1st at 1:00 pm - Show #3

  • June 1st at 5:00 pm - Show #4

While we can’t always promise certain dates, with enough advanced notice, we can accommodate day and time requests on a first-come-first-served basis. If you have a request, please let us know ASAP and we can do our best to make it happen for you!

Timeline

We begin preparing for our June recital more than an year in advance, so this timeline has already begun! From the way we structure our classes all season to securing a great venue, to preparing our dancers and their families for what’s in store on recital weekend, we spend a lot of time and care making decisions about this weekend that we feel will best serve you. Here’s what you can expect throughout the rest of the season:

  • Starting in August: The bulk of our timeline starts in August and runs all season - dancers gain proficiency not only in the steps we showcase during recital, but in the skills they need to make recital weekend a success: confidence, Choreography retention, getting used to dancing in front of an audience (that’s part of the reason we do Watch Week three times during our season), and learning the “Handogrpahy” our teachers use as guides on recital day.

  • September + October: We begin measuring dancers for recital costumes. As we measure and select sizes for our dancers, we keep in mind that they’ll grow between now and May. With several decades of experience selecting costume sizes, we’ve figured out just the right amount to factor in so your dancer’s costume fits well when it arrives.

  • December 14th, 2024: Recital fee and costume payment deadline

  • January 31st, 2025: Recital fee and costume payment deadline for all NEW dance families.

  • February 2025: We begin teaching recital dances in class.

  • April 2025: Costumes arrive and we’ll begin sending them home with dancers in April (most likely after spring break)

  • May 29th + 30th, 2025: Dress rehearsal dates.

  • May 31st and June 1st: Recital Weekend!

  • Late June/early July, 2025: Photo + Video purchases are sent out to families

Cost

The cost to participate in our annual recital weekend has two components - your family recital fee of $68 (which includes a t-shirt for all the dancers in your family) and your costume fee(s) for your dancer(s), which range from $72 - $75 per costume depending on which class or classes your dancer is enrolled in. Here’s the breakdown for costume fees:

  • If your dancer is enrolled in a 3 to 4’s, 4 to 5’s, 5 to 6’s, 6 to 7’s, or 7 to 9’s class, you will pay a single fee of $72 plus tax.

  • If your dancers is enrolled in the Intermediate or Advanced Intermediate class, you will pay two $74 costume fees (one for a ballet costume and one for a tap/Jazz costume) plus tax.

  • If your dancer is enrolled in a Company level class, you will pay $75 per costume plus tax for each class participating in the recital. (The classes that are purely technique/not participating in recital are: Junior Company Pre-Pointe, Senior Prep Pre-Pointe, Junior Company/Senior Prep Technique, Senior Company/Apprentice Technique and Prevent + Restore).

  • There will be optional action shots, posed shots and video available for purchase around recital time.

All costume and recital fees are due by Saturday, December 14th. If you’d like to set up a payment plan or have questions about the above, we’d be happy to accommodate - just reach out to us at hello@thriveschoolofdance.com and we can set that up for you! You will see all costume fees posted to your account with the December 14th due date. You’re welcome to log in to pay at any time that’s convenient for you, or we’ll plan to charge your payment method on file if you’re enrolled in auto-pay on December 14th. To all new families registering in January 2025, please complete payment or opt-out by January 31st.

All recital fees are non-refundable.

To ensure that our shows stay at a reasonable length (we aim for under 90 minutes), we assign each class one of our four recital shows. Check below to see which show your dancer’s class is assigned to. Know that it’s our strong desire and goal to make sure siblings have the same dress rehearsal and recital day and time. While we were able to accomplish that for 98% of our families this year, there are a few sibling pairs that do not have the same times due to logistical constraints. If you have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

Location + Parking

We do a lot of research and planning to make sure our recital venues will meet the needs of our growing community (and when they don’t, we adjust). Here are the details for this season’s recital weekend venue:

  • Venue Address: The Ogle Center at IU Southeast (4201 Grant Line Rd, New Albany, IN 47150)

Yes, this venue is in Indiana. We spent a lot of time touring many different venues this summer and here’s why we landed on The Ogle Center:

  • It’s SUPER easy to navigate to and 25 minutes from Thrive School of Dance.

  • Ample seating

  • Ample free parking

  • Ample restrooms

  • Dancer drop-off and auditorium entrance are on the same floor and just a few steps from each other

  • Spacious, clean, professional lobby with easy and accessible pathways to the auditorium

  • Large area on the second floor for families with multiple dancers/who will spend a lot of time at the venue that has tables, desks, couches and WiFi

FAQs

When will we know the exact date and time for dress rehearsal and recital?

We release the exact dates and time assignments for both recital and dress rehearsal in early February. By this time, we have stopped enrolling new students and have all the availability from our staff to finalize the assignments.

How do I do my dancer's hair?

A good rule of thumb is to make sure your child's hair is out of his or her face so they'll be able to see on stage. We would LOVE if their hair could be in a ballet bun. We will release a detailed guide to recital hair in the spring.

What if we can’t or don’t wish to participate in the recital?

If you do not wish to participate or are unable to this year, please opt-out by emailing us at hello@thriveschoolofdance.com and we’ll make that note on your account. The earlier you let us know this the better!

What is the recital process timeline?

We begin the recital process in October by measuring our dancers. Recital and costume fees are due in December. We order costumes before the holidays to ensure they arrive in time for the show (yes, they do take that long). Dancers begin learning their recital dances in January/February. You’ll receive your costume in April, then our show is the first weekend in June.

Will there be photo and video opportunities?

We will have professional photography and videography available for purchase during recital season. Each dancer will get a professional posed portrait and you’ll have the option of purchasing prints or downloads. Our staff photographer (and alum) will be capturing action shots during the show and backstage. You are welcome to take your own photos and videos during dress rehearsal, but we ask that you do not during the performance.

Where do I buy tights?

You can get tights locally at Kinney Dancewear (we've talked with them, so they know exactly what color and type of tights we'd like) or you can get them online. One of our favorite online dance retailers is Discount Dance.

If I have a question on dress rehearsal or recital day, who should I ask?

Find a staff member with "The Fam" on the back of their shirt. The quickest way to reach us is by texting or calling 502-325-3818, or emailing hello@thriveschoolofdance.com.

Do I need to purchase tickets for the show?

All of our annual recitals are free, non-ticketed events, so feel free to bring whoever you’d like - there are no limits on the number of family and friends welcome.
